Said to be descended from Hessian soldiers who came to US from Germany during Revolutionary War to fight against the Patriots. Many decided to stayed here after the war and became citizens.   Original name from early Reformation times may have been "Petit" from Bethum, Normandy, France and were Hugenot Protestants fleeing religious persecution according to oral history.
