One of our earliest known ancestor is Andrew Cottrill who was one of the first settlers of Harrison County, at the time VA, now WVA.  We don't know whether he and the Andrew Cottrill of Prince Georges County, MD are one in the same person; or if he were the son of Andrew of MD  .   The tie between the two is that Sotha Hickman, who came with Andrew to the Clarksburg area was said to be from Rockville, MD- which is in Prince Georges County. Cottrills may have come from MD as Andrew married Elizabeth Achors in Frederick County, MD.

In the year of 1771, 5 people came to Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV. The following Spring they took up land.  Andrew Cottrill and his brother Samuel were two of these people.  Andrew Cottrill appears to be the Cottrill that we are interested in as our ancestor in our history.  He had 400 acres of land which grant was confirmed to his heirs in 1781 so he died either in 1781 or prior to that time.  He had the following sons: William, who made his entry of land on Elk Creek in the year of 1781.  Married Rachel Hughes 5/25/1794.  Thomas, who apparently was a minor when his father died. Ann Burrows, with Elmon West as security, was appointed his guardian. Andrew, who apparently was also a minor and Joseph Davisson was appointed his guardian.

MD Court Records:   Andrew Cottrill went to court 8 times that we know of!  4 times in the year 1746. Here are some highlights.

-June 1746  "Prince George's County, aforesaid, we the grand jurors, of the foresaid County, do present Andrew Cottrill for selling liquours at ornery prices, without license by testimony of Thomas Fletchall. "

-Nov 1746 Andrew Cottrill vs. Hugh Rice. " Hugh owed Andrew money 9 pounds, 5 shillings. Apparently for rum purchased from Andrew. The court was not sympathetic."

-Prince George County, 9/1/1748 Land Records. EE-F-507-508. "Andrew Cottrill, planter, for and in consideration of a quantity of 2000 pounds of tobacco now due and justly owed unto John Cooke... do grant, bargain, and sell unto said John Cooke, his heirs and assigns 1 negro man named Patrick, and negro woman named Jenny and negro boys Dick and Harry, also 30 head of black cattle- also be John Cookes if Andrew doesn't pay the 2000 pounds by next October.

On July 2, 1769 Andrew claimed a 342 acre tract of land called "Plot #35, Elk Hills" on the Monogahela River in Nicholson Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The tract was located where New Geneve stands today. The land was surveyed June 26, 1770 and was conveyed to John Wilson September 17, 1785.

Traditional family history states that Andrew had an Indian wife, but one Harrison County, VA minute book refers to Andrew's son Thomas as "son of Nancy Moor."

In 1771, Andrew and his brother Samuel apparently moved from Pennsylvania and sttled on Elk Creek in the part of Monongalia County, VA that became Harrison County, VA (WV) in 1774. Andrew was allegedly shot by John Simpson in an altercation over either a pint or peck of salt, depending on the source material.

Glen Lough commented on the incident in his book "Now and Long Ago": "William Childers wrote that 'Mr. John Simpson traded down where Morgantown is for a long time and would come here where Clarksburg is when the Indians came in to hunt, and trade with them like all the others. He built a trading cabin on Elk Creek in later years and that's where he shot Mr. Andrew Cottral after he stole some salt from Mr. Cottral and his friends, and Mr. Cotral came to his cabin with his gun to get it back. They took Mr. Cotral's body down the river in a canoe to his home in Pennsylvania and buried it. and he said that Mr. Simpson did not tell the truth when he said he shot Mr. Cotral because he saw that Mr. Cotral was about to shoot him.'"

Andrew died before 1781, since two Monongalia County land certificates issued in 1781 assigned propperty to his heirs. These two tracts were near Nutters Fort.

"Heirs of Andrew Cottrill, deceased, 400 acres on Ann Moore's Run, adjoining lands of Amaziah DAvisson, to include his settlement made in 1772."
"Heirs of Andrew Cottrill, deceased, 400 acres of the water of Elk Creek, adjoining lands of Joseph Hastings, to include his settlement made in 1773."

(Note: It is possible that Ann Moore's Run was named for Andrew Cottrell's wife, Nancy "Ann" Moore.)

Although the records are silent on Andrew's widow, Harrison County, VA minute books record the "binding out" of children of Andrew Cottrell years after his death. William was bound to Alexander West September 22, 1784, Thomas to Ann Burrows September 17, 1787, and Andrew to James Davidson October 15, 1787. Orphan children were usually "bound out" to families in the community, however, apprentices for various trades were also bound out.

Andrew was released August 18, 1790 as being of full age and having received his estate in full. This release suggests that Andrew's children were apprentices rather thatn "bound out orphans."

The History of Harrison County, contained in the WV Heritage Encyclopedia, comments on the Cottrells as follows:
"Both Andrew and Samuel left descendants who are still with us. The Cottrells have for generations been distinguished for their personal courage; they were quick to take offense and were always ready to avenge an insult either to themselves or to a friend. They were tough customers to tackle in a rough and tumble fist fight. It is said that they never used weapons, always fought fair and quit when the other fellow called "enough", which was most generally the case."

In the August 1976 issue of the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society bulletin, Samuel Cottrell's name appears on a list of persons killed or captured by Indians in 1779.

FROM: COTTRILLS AND WOLFES OF HARRISON COUNTY WEST VIRGINIA:

In the 1760's, members of the Cottrell family left the Richmond Virginia area and settled the Blue Ridge foothills of Nelson and Amherst counties, Virginia. Whether these were kin with the Harrison County, West Virginia Cottrills has yet to be determined.
John Simpson established a hunting camp at the mouth of Elk Creek, Clarksburg, West Virginia, in 1764, from which base he hunted for meat and furs. Around 1766, Simpson argued with another pioneer named Cottrial, and Cottrial was shot and killed in the dispute. It is not know what if any kin he was with Samuel and Andrew Cottrill.

On 31 December 1771 explorers John Merrick, Samuel and Andrew Cottrill, Levi Douglass, and Sotha Hickman camped on Ann Moores Run near Grasselli in Clark District, hunting and looking for settlement lands. Heavey settlement exausted the food supply and 1773 was remembered as the starving year. The County deedbook records Samuel Cottrill's heirs assigning to Charles Griggoley, 400 acres on Rooting Creek, including his settlement made in 1775. Heirs of Andrew Cottrill, deceased, settled the estate including 400 acres on the waters of Elk Creek adjoining lands of Joseph Hastings, to include his settlement made in 1773. Samuel Cottrill's homestead was attacked by indians in 1779.
